Q:
I drive a 40 rt diesel pusher towing a suv. Is it safe to drive on 101?
A:
My RV is a 22' Winnebago Outlook. I have never driving a 40' or a toad. However, I see others doing it all the time. Commercial truckers use 101. Happy trails.

Well, it depends on how adventurous you are, and what you are driving. 1. Take US 30 West out of Portland to Astoria (you will drive right past my house). (Do not take OR 26 - you will miss a significant portion of the North Coast.) 2. Stay on US 101 from Astoria to Eureka CA (about 550 miles.) Plan on at least a day, maybe two. 3. Now, it gets interesting. US 101 pulls away from "The Lost Coast" here. If you want to head direct to Tahoe, take CA 36 to I-5 at Red Bluff; south on I-5 to Sacramento, then take US 50 to S. Lake Tahoe. Another 250 miles. 4. If you are adventurous, and want to see a coastline totally unlike "The Jersey Shore", continue south on US 101 to Leggett, then take CA 1 all the way south to Jenner (if you have a big rig and aren't used to narrow, twisty roads, I wouldn't recommend this. Take Option 3.) If you're game, but have seen enough Wild Coast, turn off CA 1 at (or near) Jenner, on to CA 116. Go east to CA 12, through the Wine Country, to I-80 at Vacaville. Then north a few miles to US 50 and on to Tahoe. 5. Otherwise, continue south on CA 1 to Mill Valley, then I-580 to I-80, and thence to US 50. P.S. The traffic in and around the Bay Area is worse than I-95 on a 3-day weekend. Totally Different than Chadds Ford. Been there (mother-in-law). Safe Travels! If this is unclear, post another question about Oregon Coast Highway. Glad to be of service.
