Mexican-American clothing designer Willy Chavarria has apologized after Mexican authorities accused him of "cultural appropriation" over an Adidas sandal. The ' Oaxaca Slip On' design has drawn criticism for its striking resemblance to traditional Indigenous footwear.

Critics in Mexico argued that the shoe uses the name of the southern Mexican state, a major manufacturer of the traditional leather sandals, while Chavarria's design is manufactured in China and Indigenous artisans received no credit or benefit from the multinational firm.

Willy Chavarria, the designer of the shoe, also apologized after Mexican officials leveled accusations of cultural appropriation.
