Following the death of former President Jimmy Carter, President Joe Biden declared a national day of mourning on Thursday Jan. 9, the day of Carter's funeral at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. The last national day of mourning was in December 2018 to honor former President George H. W. Bush.

Flags will remain at half-mast and half-staff most of the month for Jimmy Carter's death. Jan. 9 will be a national day of mourning for his funeral.

The day of mourning will be held on the same day as Mr. Carter’s funeral at Washington National Cathedral. President Biden will deliver a eulogy at the funeral, and a eulogy written by Gerald Ford, who died in 2006, will be read by his son Steven Ford.
