As if the Indiana Fever needed another injury to a star player, but they got one on Sunday when guard Sophie Cunningham went down with a brutal-looking knee injury. Her mom and sister took to social media after to blast the WNBA, its refs, and the player involved in the injury.
Sophie Cunningham was helped off the court in the second quarter of Indiana’s game against the Connecticut Sun after Bria Hartley fell into her leg. Cunningham was in visible pain as she clutched her knee before she was helped off the court and to the locker room. The Fever quickly announced she would return to the game.
The Indiana Fever (18-16) hit the road in hopes of stopping a losing skid when they visit the Connecticut Sun (6-26) today, August 17. The Fever are seventh in the WNBA playoff standings while the Sun have the league's worst record.
But that wasn’t all. Guards Aari McDonald and Sydney Colson both suffered season-ending injuries in the same game on August 7 against the Phoenix Mercury. McDonald sustained a fracture in her right foot, while Colson tore her left ACL.

On the play that got Cunningham injured, the Sun's Bria Hartley turned over the ball and then awkwardly fell into the unsuspecting Fever guard. Cunningham immediately clutched her right knee in pain and was later helped off the court into the locker room. She was ruled out for the rest of the game shortly after.
The Fever’s playoff outlook now rests on a knife’s edge as they try to stay competitive without multiple starters. With Clark still sidelined and Cunningham likely to miss time, the team will rely on Aliyah Boston and Kelsey Mitchell to keep them afloat in a tight playoff race.
