The University of Virginia is returning to normal after an active attacker incident prompted a shelter-in-place order across its campus Thursday evening.

The University of Virginia Police Department is warning of an armed “active attacker” on the Grounds. Just before 5 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, an emergency alert was sent to students; school officials confirmed there was a man armed with a knife in the area of 100 Emmet Street across from Alumni Hall.

The University of Virginia Police Department and community members are currently under a shelter in place while police are looking for a suspect. UVA PD said that Nyheem Hill was last seen near Alderman Road a fled the scene on foot after an off-grounds traffic stop near IVY Road.

The University of Virginia Police Department has reported that the shelter-in-place has been lifted. Police believe the suspect has left the area, however, police will remain on the scene. Classes will resume on Wednesday.

The University of Virginia was placed on lockdown and classes were canceled Tuesday as police searched for a man last seen on Grounds.

UVA police say the suspect, Nyheem Hill, fled following an off-campus traffic stop near Ivy Road. The order was lifted around 1:40 p.m.
