Wondery’s audio-only podcasts — such as the true-crime hits “Dr. Death” and “Dirty John” — will be now be overseen by Audible, the audiobook arm of Amazon, and earn money primarily through subscriptions.

Despite securing big names in the business, the company is now shifting its strategy in an effort to better compete with rivals like Spotify and YouTube.

In a memo to staff obtained by Deadline, Steve Boom, Amazon’s vice president of audio, Twitch, and games, said the rise of video podcasting has created “different audience needs” and requires “distinct discovery, growth, and monetization strategies” compared to traditional audio-only narrative podcasts.
