Governor Tate Reeves (R-Miss.) announced he requested a waiver from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service to ban the purchase of “unhealthy processed foods and beverages” using Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.
The suspension of the federal welfare program is expected to impact more than 350,000 Mississippians by the weekend unless agreement is reached in the U.S. Senate.
About one in eight Americans receives SNAP benefits in the United States, plus Washington, D.C., as of May, the latest data available, totaling almost 42 million people across more than 22 million households.
