In an interview with TBPN, Satya Nadella, the current CEO of Microsoft, claimed that they don’t view Nintendo and PlayStation as their main competitors. Instead, their biggest competition is social media and short-form media sites like TikTok. “Gaming’s competition is not other gaming. Gaming’s competition is short-form video,” Nadella said.
Nintendo weathered the threat from Netflix by doing the opposite of Microsoft: doubling-down on exclusive games and convenient dedicated gaming hardware. The tech giant now appears to be taking the inverse approach: multiplatform games and more expensive devices.
