The Netherlands Friday scheduled a snap election for October 29 following the collapse of the government caused by the far-right Party for Freedom leaving the governing coalition.

Dutch opposition parties called Wednesday for fresh elections as soon as possible, a day after anti-Islam lawmaker Geert Wilders sparked the collapse of the country's four-party coalition government.

Right-wing leader Geert Wilders' exit from government ended the already fragile Dutch coalition after just 11 months in power. Like other major economies in the European Union, the Netherlands has grown increasingly fragmented as parties struggle to reach consensus on sensitive topics such as immigration.
