Back-to-back winter storms hit the East this weekend with arctic blast behind them next week
Two winter storms will move through the East this weekend, with cold air coming right behind it in an arctic blast forecast for next week.
Update at 7:46 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 4, 2026: A winter storm warning is now in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday (Jan. 6) for the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, above 11,000 feet, as deep moisture being drawn up from the south ahead of a developing cold-core kona low is expected to produce periods of heavy snow and ice atop the Big Island volcanoes.
Snow flurries are possible in northern regions of the Southeast between Jan. 28 and 31 and again in parts of North Carolina and Tennessee between Feb. 8 and 11, according to the weather prediction. The coastal areas of the Southeast, however, are more likely to just see rain, the Almanac shows.
