As Portland anticipated a 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline for the 9th Circuit Court’s judges to decide whether to reconsider federal deployment of Oregon National Guard troops to the city, a festive mood returned Monday outside the city’s U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building that has been at the center of protests since June.
Residents gathered beneath the Little Village Arch on Saturday afternoon before marching down 26th Street, chanting for ICE to leave their community.
It was supposed to be a small, peaceful protest, but there was a moment when things got out of control,” one protester said.
Protesters clashed again with Customs and Enforcement Agency agents and other law enforcement outside an immigration processing center in suburban Chicago.
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other left-wing legal groups claimed in court Thursday that using crowd control gas was not justified to disperse a crowd allegedly throwing rocks and fireworks at law enforcement.
