As TD Garden sells out for Fever-Sun game, Boston pushes for WNBA team
Officials in Gloucester, Massachusetts, issued a warning over the weekend about stinging jellyfish spotted at one of their local beaches. “The City is currently dealing with Lion’s Mane jellyfish in the outer harbor at Niles Beach, and we’re actively reaching out to NOAA for guidance,” the city said in a Facebook post on Saturday. “These jellyfish can deliver painful stings—even after they’ve washed ashore—so please use caution and avoid any jellyfish you may see.” They said their current safety protocols include keeping people out of the water where jellyfish are present, posting the marine hazard flag if significant numbers are spotted at Good Harbor Beach and restricting water access or closing the water entirely depending on jellyfish activity at Niles, Good Harbor or even Half Moon beaches. “You don’t want to put yourself in a situation where you’re gonna have contact with them,” said Bob Glenn, deputy director of the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries. “They’re not particularly dangerous, but they are very painful.” And he said the lion’s mane stingers remain armed even after the jellyfish is dead. If you do get stung, he said hot water can help alleviate the symptoms. City staff are monitoring the situation closely and said they will update the public as needed. “I’ve read a lot about the jellyfish beign here, and so I was a little bit concerned,” beachgoer Paul Matthews said. “We’re seeing a few dead ones on the beach. As long as you’re vigilant and you keep your eyes open, I think you can avoid the jellyfish.” The lion’s mane jellyfish started popping up on beaches in Maine last month as well, prompting several communities to issue warnings. According to The Weather Channel, the lion’s mane jellyfish — which they describe as looking like “oozing, bloody blobs of goo” — are washing ashore more often than usual this year. And they’re larger than the ones typically seen in these parts.
