‘The Office’ Universe Expands with ‘The Paper’ — First Poster Out Now
Get ready for another mockumentary-style comedy from the creators of The Office. A new show called The Paper is on its way, and this time the story shifts from a paper company to a paper itself, a local newspaper trying to survive in the modern world. The series is set to premiere on Peacock on September 4, 2025. Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, The Paper is a follow-up to The Office, but it doesn’t bring back the Scranton crew. Instead, it introduces a whole new cast and a new setting, but it takes place in the same universe. According to NBCUniversal, the show follows the same documentary team from The Office as they turn their cameras toward a dying Midwestern newspaper called The Truth Teller in Toledo, Ohio. The paper is trying to stay alive with the help of volunteer reporters. The cast includes Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore in the lead roles, along with Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Tim Key, and Eric Rahill. A few familiar faces will show up too. Oscar Nuñez, who played Oscar in The Office, is coming back as the same character in a recurring role. The production team behind the scenes is pretty stacked as well. Greg Daniels is back, co-creating the show with Michael Koman. The two are also executive producers, alongside Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant (the original creators of The Office), as well as Howard Klein and Ben Silverman. Directors for the first season include names familiar to The Office fans like Paul Lieberstein, Jennifer Celotta, Matt Sohn, and Dave Rogers, plus others like Yana Gorskaya and Jason Woliner. The show was first teased back in January 2024, when Daniels hinted that a new project related to The Office was in early development. In March, Daniels and Koman were confirmed as co-creators. By May, Peacock officially ordered the series, and in June, the title The Paper was revealed. Filming began in July 2024. In an earlier press announcement, NBCUniversal shared the show’s basic plot: “In Toledo, Ohio, a documentary crew focuses its efforts on The Truth Teller, a historic but declining Midwestern newspaper trying to resurrect itself with volunteer reporters.” Fans of The Office will likely recognize the humor and style right away. And with a fresh setting and new characters, The Paper could be the next big thing in mockumentary TV. Stay tuned for more as we get closer to the premiere date on September 4.
