Retail job losses are surging, with Amazon and Target cutting nearly 32,000 corporate jobs combined, signaling a major industry restructuring.

But the thousands of job cuts announced by Amazon.com Inc. and United Parcel Service Inc. on Tuesday may suggest that the U.S. job market’s current state of suspension has changed for the worse.

“We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today,” he wrote.
