ATHENS, Greece — Wildfires intensified across southern Europe on Wednesday with a round-the-clock battle to protect the perimeter of Greece’s third-largest city and at least three deaths reported in Spain, Turkey and Albania.

Firefighting resources are stretched thin in many countries after weeks of temperature spikes across the Mediterranean region.

Spain has officially asked for assistance from its European neighbours to fight forest fires that have been raging through the country's northwest.
