On the second-to-last day of the spring legislative session, Illinois lawmakers have finally proposed a new bill outlining how to fund CTA, Meta and Pace as the Regional Transportation Authority approaches a critical fiscal cliff.

The Chicago area is facing the prospect of bleak service cuts to public transit if Illinois legislators adjourn this weekend without plugging a $770 million hole in the transportation budget.

Transit agencies have warned that they would have to dramatically slash service if legislators don’t find funding to plug the budget gap, which comes as COVID-19 relief funding runs out.
