Teacher Appreciation Week begins Monday, as students and parents across the Houston area offer educators gratitude and gifts for the work they do. The first National Teachers' Day was March 7, 1953, after former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt persuaded the 81st Congress to create a day of dedication for educators.
