In the face of a looming lapse in SNAP funding amidst the continuing government shutdown, Instacart is rolling out a new grocery offer to help families that use SNAP, as well as a national food bank drive to support hundreds of food banks preparing for higher demand.

According to Second Harvest Food Bank, rising grocery prices increased demand on pantries prior to the halting of CalFresh benefits.

While funding for SNAP was ordered to continue on Friday, Oct. 31, many Californians may still need food assistance in the coming weeks.

With SNAP benefits on hold, Laredo food banks and schools mobilize to feed families. A citywide food drive is planned to help fill the growing gap.

There was still milk — chocolate and plain — butter, loaves of bread, boxes of cereal and in a freezer, chicken and other meats. Families must be from West Springfield, Agawam and Feeding Hills to qualify. By about noon, there were 20 or so in the dining room for lunch.

The Food Bank of Northeast Georgia is making plans to respond to the impending loss of funding for a federal food program.
