An 18-year-old surf instructor is recovering in the hospital after a shark bit his foot while he was surfing off New Smyrna Beach on Friday, an area known for frequent shark encounters, according

Sam Hollis said he was out on the water instructing when a big wave knocked him under. Once he got back onto his board, he said he didn't see the shark grab a hold of him.

Hollywood Fire Rescue officials said they, along with Hallandale Beach Broward Sheriff's Office, responded to the 4100 block of Ocean Drive after reports of an individual suffering a serious injury. The man received medical attention on scene and was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
