Moon is one of the 284,000 Bexar County residents who uses Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. On Monday, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said the federal food benefits will not go out on Nov. 1 because the “well has run dry” on funding amid the government shutdown.
This comes in the wake of the continued federal government shutdown and the recent announcement that SNAP will not be funded for November.
About 284,000 people receive SNAP benefits in Bexar County, but that benefit will dry up on Saturday. That’s about $45.5 million distributed each month. There are about 128,000 Bexar County households using SNAP benefits, with the average home receiving $385 per month according to the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
