Ontario premier criticizes Trump after Stellantis says it will move production from Canada to the US TORONTO (AP) — The leader of Canada's most populous province called for economic retaliation on the U.S. after auto company Stellantis said it was moving planned production of its Jeep Compass from Canada to the U.S.
Stellantis announced Tuesday it will invest $13 billion US over the next four years to expand its manufacturing capacity in the U.S. — a move that will take production of one model out of Ontario and raises concerns about Canadian jobs.
The future of thousands of Brampton jobs is in jeopardy as car manufacturer Stellantis has decided to shift work to a U.S. facility. Stellantis announced late today (Oct. 14) that its planned Jeep Compass production will now take place in Illinois instead of the Brampton Assembly plant on Williams Parkway.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Stellantis NV will decide on future vehicle production at its factory in Brampton, Ontario, once a review of the North American free trade deal is finalized.
The federal government gave Stellantis close to $105 million to retool two Ontario plants and is now reviewing the contract to see if the automaker violated the deal by announcing it's moving some Canadian production to the U.
Stellantis faces a fierce backlash in Canada after canceling Compass production, with officials threatening legal action and demanding accountability
