The Triple Aim—enhancing patient experience, improving population health, and reducing costs—is widely accepted as a compass to optimize health system performance. Yet physicians and other members of the health care workforce report widespread burnout and dissatisfaction.

In years past, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement coined the term Triple Aim, which describes an approach to optimize health system performance. The focal points are improving patient experience, including the quality of care and patient satisfaction; improving the health of populations; and reducing the per capita cost of health care.

Improving the U.S. health care system requires simultaneous pursuit of three aims: improving the experience of care, improving the health of populations, and reducing per capita costs of health care.

In 2008, Donald Berwick and associates described the Triple Aim, in which improving the patient’s experience of care, improving the health of populations of patients, and reducing the per capita cost of care may lead to a high-quality health care system, facilitating this transformation. 1

The IHI Triple Aim framework serves as the foundation for optimizing health for individuals and populations by simultaneously improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction), improving the health of the population, and reducing per capita cost of care for the benefit of communities.
