The word Kabaka means ‘emissary’, and sometime in the past an overseer sent from Bunyoro had set himself up as an independent ruler.

The kabaka was also the high priest and supreme judge of the land. Ruling through a system of governors and district chiefs, the kabaka maintained absolute control over his ever-expanding kingdom.

Kabaka Mutebi II was enthroned on 31st July 1993, becoming the 36th King of Buganda. His coronation marked the restoration of the Buganda Kingdom, which had been abolished in 1966.
