It is so important that mama eats the placenta. It gives her back a lot of the nutrients she’s lost, that she needs, and then she also detaches the kitten from it. There’s rarely a reason for you to have to intervene and do that (though Calliope was so exhausted I did have to carefully bring the placenta closer to her face without disturbing the kitten who had started nursing). Hoping we are done at 3 kittens. Mama is just a baby herself (a prime example of why early spay is so important). | Sop

And then a second later, she came racing out to try to kill me, but luckily listens to “no” and went back with the kittens. Again because she started feeling threatened and make sure she knew that it was OK (because I don’t want her to get in the habit of chasing me out so I don’t want her to think she can), so I sit there just a little longer and then I got up, added more dry food to her bowl while she watched, did her litter whole she watched, and left. Spending time in Oz is exactly the kind of day off I needed. This Wicked litter is just filled with cuddly, sweet, most loving kittens. Every single one of them and utter dream. They have the brains, the heart, the courage already they don’t need a thing from the wizard in order to be ready to find there’s no place like home. They are getting spayed/neutered on November 6 and then soon after we’ll be ready for forever homes. But they can be spoken for in advance, and honestly shocked that they h

But then of course it was Eve, our little Spare Rib, who wanted to come out to be with us. Spare Me-me is definitely a helicopter mom, and will throw herself between you and the kittens and distract you with her purrs and demands for pets. But Eve did insist on attention. Don’t worry about the wood floor. It helps them build up their muscles. She’s navigating it beautifully and exploring. Spare Key and Spare Change are catnapping. | Sophia L’Orange Kitten Rescue

At 6 week old the kittens are very playful. They are steady on their feet, have good coordination, and are keen to pounce and wrestle. Socialization and play at this point are key as they grow more and more independent from mom. Beebe has this down. #thisisfostering #fosterkitten #kitten #kittenfoster #fosteringsaveslives | Sophia L’Orange Kitten Rescue

Day 6, after Full of Grace gets over her shock at the kittens surviving my switching out their blanket she accepted some gentle pets from me. Note, when weaned all these kittens and their mom will be spayed/neutered and we’ll find them loving homes. In the meantime you can follow their day by day progress on our rescue’s facebook page. #thisisfostering #fosteringsaveslives #kittenfoster #thisisrescue #fostercat #neonatalkitten #neonatalkittens #neonatalkittenrescue #kittylove #nursingcat #kitten

Full of Grace’s kittens are 3 weeks old. And while they can now process food, eliminate independently without stimulation, and regulate their own temperature, they’ll still look to her for so much. We’ve opened up the nest a bit for them to start to explore, but they’re still happy to remain within the dollhouse a bit longer | Sophia L’Orange Kitten Rescue

At 9 days old kittens’ eyes are starting to open, but they won’t be able to really focus on anything. Their whole world right now is mom and each other. Warmth and comfort. The majority of their time is still spent sleeping, when they are not nursing. They still completely rely on mom all their needs. So our job as a foster is making sure she is cared for. #kittenfoster #neonatalkittens #kittenfostermom #fosterkitten #tinykitten #fosteringkittens #fosteringsaveslives #kittenrescue #purrs #Thisis

One of our favorite things, while sharing our work with kittens, is highlighting local bands (like we do with local bookshops). While cats and books are just purrfect particularly on a snowy Caturday like today, kittens too are absolutely entranced by live music (though at home start with more acoustic instruments). This is the title track of Hawkins French’s new album, pop over to his instagram too to hear more (we also do love that Hawk wears our hats to gigs!). His family, too, is fabulous wi

David is actually the one who looks at me and says ewwwww. He is nervous, but will cry for Moira when he’s hiding so he hadn’t been taught to be quiet, as feral kittens usually are, so think have a good shot with this baby boy. Not vicious, just nervous His fur is short but dense. His round face and big eyes are adorable. Good poops. A bit of a runny nose but hopefully not so bad that needs antibiotics. Amazed he made it outside in this frigid weather as long as he did. He’s in quarantine here w

Just after foster mom Michell said the glossy pages kittens don’t mew, got this message “I don’t know how it happens, but I feel like cats enjoy making liars out of me. Mind, they have always come to me when I get into their area. But of course this morning there was some squeaking and purring.” Yep, it’s always the case! #fosteringsaveslives #thisisfostering #foradoption #adopt #ForeverHomeNeeded #kittens #kittenfoster #fosterkittens #makeliarofyou #tuxedokittens #tigerkittens #Tabby #mews #meo

Most often as mama is weaning her 5 and a 1/2 week old kittens, they’ll still try to go to her rather than the kitten food in the room. So they may need a little help to remember when they are screaming at her to feed them that there’s food. #thisisfostering #kittenfoster #fosterkittens #kittenrescue #fosterkitten | Sophia L’Orange Kitten Rescue

THIS IS FOSTERING Fostering allows us to be a temporary respite for animals in need. Fostering means cuddling, it means socializing, it means caring completely and loving so fully so that they know only love and care. The goal is sending them off to live with wonderful families to free yourself up to foster the next batch that desperately need you. The goal is goodbye, but the journey is amazing. Filled with love and sometimes tears, but always worth it. Keeping them healthy, warm, and helping t
