January is called Gichi-Manidoo-Giizis in Ojibwe which translates to “Great Spirit Moon.” Sometimes you may see the “Gichi” dropped to name the month simply as “Manidoo-Giizis.” Another name, used more in the Eastern Canada border lakes, is Aabita-Bibooni-Giizis. The Ojibwe Word of the Weekend is ayaabe. Last week we posted the general word for deer in Ojibwe, waawaashkeshi. If you want to speak specifically about a buck in Ojibwe, the word to use is ayaabe. You’ll notice in this video that the ‘n’ towards the end of Gidagaakoons a parenthesis around it because that ‘n’ is sometimes hard to hear and a little more nasal.
