This is 'The Trolley Problem' and some derivatives. As a thought experiment, it tests our ethics and how they are formed. These are no longer 'intellectual' or 'academic' hypotheticals. We are being asked to decide these things (or approve the decisions of our politicians) everyday thanks to a massively increased appetite for government intervention.
