Work is underway to install more renewable energy systems across our treatment works and pumping stations, supporting our goal of generating at least 40% of our own operational energy by 2030. As part of this project, five new solar farm sites at Filey, Malton, Belle Vue, Monk Bretton, and Harrogate South were recently switched on. The process of treating clean water, getting it to your homes and businesses, and treating wastewater before safely returning it to the environment uses a lot of ener

We know overflows are operating more than we, or our customers, would like, and we wanted to update you on the steps we’re taking to address this. In the last two years, our colleagues and partners have been working on improving 142 storm overflows throughout Yorkshire to reduce discharges and improve water quality in the region's watercourses. This has contributed to a 12% reduction in discharges and a 17% reduction in discharge duration in 2024 compared to 2023. Currently, 84 overflows across

Starting on Friday 11 July, a temporary use ban (TUB), will come into effect in Yorkshire. This will help our region’s reservoir levels recover and protect Yorkshire's water resources throughout the summer months, following one of the driest springs on record and the region being in drought. We understand you might have questions; please watch the video below to learn more about why we’re introducing these restrictions. The restrictions will be in place until the region has seen significant rain

The wetland is part of a significant £21.1m investment in nature-based solutions to improve water quality and support biodiversity. 🌱 The wetland will help to reduce storm overflow discharges and phosphorus into Frickley Beck - a tributary of the river Don. In this video, Dave is delving into how our Water Resource Management Plan helps us to understand what we need to do to manage Yorkshire’s water supplies into the future. This includes considerations for new reservoirs, expanding on groundwater sources and reducing demand. Drought permits issued to Yorkshire Water to protect River Wharfe

This year has been exceptionally dry, with Yorkshire experiencing the driest spring on record in 132 years. We’ve now had seven months of below-average rainfall, and our reservoir levels are continuing to drop. To help us prepare for the months ahead and refill our reservoirs over winter, we’ve applied for drought permits from the Environment Agency. These permits would temporarily allow us to: 🔹 Take more water from rivers to maintain supply 🔹 Reduce how much water we release from reservoirs

This year, the Met Office announced that we had the warmest and driest spring on record, and we’re potentially soon going to have had one of the hottest summers yet. This unusual weather has put a real strain on our water resources. As a result, reservoir levels are down to 39.1%, which is 35.1% lower than the average for this time of year. To help protect Yorkshire’s water supplies so there’s enough for everyone, now and in the months ahead, the hosepipe restrictions are still in place. In this

Even though we've had some rainfall in Yorkshire, on average, our weather is becoming drier and warmer for longer. Plus, the UK has more homes and businesses using water, so the need for more water is increasingly urgent. We all want to be sure there’s clean water when we turn on the tap – so let’s think about every drop we use. With the snowy and icy conditions, we may see more burst water pipes across the region due to the changes in temperature causing the ground to move and damage pipes. We know that running leaks can often turn to ice and we understand this can be concerning, but we want to reassure you that we are working to tackle these. To help us fix leaks quicker over the winter, we’ve brought in extra people who have joined our leakage team to find and fix leaks in all weather conditions as quickly as they ca

☀️ As the warm and dry weather continues, and with Yorkshire having experienced its driest combined February, March and April for 90 years, our dedicated colleagues are working around the clock to make sure there’s enough water for everyone. Currently, reservoir levels are at 73.1%, which is lower than the average for this time of year (89.5%) - that's a decrease of 3% week on week. We’ve also seen a 60 million litres per day increase in usage over the weekend – that’s enough to supply the equiv

With this year being exceptionally dry and having seven months of below-average rainfall, our reservoirs are continuing to decrease every week. If you’ve visited any of our sites over the past few months, you may have noticed that the reservoir levels differ across the region, with many looking lower than others. We know many of you would like to understand why that happens and what factors contribute to these differing levels. So if you’d like to find out more, here's Andy to explain some of th

We recently welcomed local visitors and organisations to our Clayton West wastewater treatment site in West Yorkshire to see the progress we’re making on a £14m nature-based wetland solution. Working with Mott MacDonald Bentley, we’re creating a 4.3-hectare wetland with 13 interconnected ponds. These ponds will provide an additional low-carbon and natural layer of treatment to wastewater before returning it to the river Dearne. This process will significantly improve the quality of the water in

This week, Andy is over at our site at Brayton Barff, near Selby, where work has started on a new borehole. During the drought, we’ve been utilising our groundwater sources and grid system more to move water to where it’s needed. So this week, Andy's explaining what groundwater is, how it’s used in Yorkshire and what we’re doing to improve resilience in the network. While we’ve been seeing more rain recently, the hosepipe restrictions are still in place, and we thank everyone for their continued
