The Tacoma Narrows Bridge, or “Galloping Gertie,” collapsed on November 7, 1940, just months after opening. The bridge’s deck twisted and undulated in response to strong winds, succumbing to aeroelastic flutter. This phenomenon, where aerodynamic forces matched the bridge’s natural frequency, led to its dramatic collapse into the Tacoma Narrows strait. no lives were lost in the collapse.
